The four of us walked up the street to Underground, a bar that offered alternative music for up and coming bands. Monday was open-mic night, although a band had to have their night previously scheduled in order to advertise and bring in revenue. This band had a good sound to them and I could imagine them being famous one day. I never asked where Lucy was or what happened with her, but I sensed it wasn’t good. Jacob was on his third drink, and he was definitely beyond tipsy. At midnight, I decided we’d had enough, and I offered to take Jacob home.
Ethan walked Jacob out to the cab as Ella walked next to me. Jacob was rambling about Ethan being a good kid and he was happy to have him around to protect Ella. Ella rolled her eyes so many times I thought they might actually roll back into her head. In the cab, Jacob slid to the door and I sat in the middle with Ella sitting on Ethan’s lap on my other side. It was a tight fit and Jacob’s hand landed on my thigh. I tried to gently remove it by nudging his hand lightly, but when it started to slide off, he returned it and gripped me harder. I tried again, a bit more forcefully, by picking up his hand and placing it in his own lap. He immediately returned it to hold my thigh.
“Stop it,” I hissed. He had been touching me all day, but after our bar conversation and Lucy’s mean words, I understood. Hands off.
“No,” he growled. “I can’t stop.”
“Yes, you can.” I was painfully aware that Ethan and Ella were able to hear this interchange. It was embarrassingly awkward.
Jacob let his head fall back on the rest and he rolled it to look at my eyes, which were looking at his.
“Lilac,” he whispered, and his eyes had that magnetic pull to them. I licked my lips and swallowed hard. I hated the fact that I would willingly kiss him if he asked. Despite the drinking. Despite Lucy. I knew when he looked at me like that I could not deny him.
“Jacob,” my voice was firm. “I said stop it.” I returned his gaze and Jacob’s face drained. He sat up straighter.
“I would never hurt you, Lilac. Physically, never hurt you. You know that. We talked about it and you told me you believed me.” His voice was rising in a slow-building panic.
“I know, Jacob. I know.” I couldn’t stop myself. I reached for his face, and wiped down one side. He leaned into my hand and kissed my palm. His breathing slowed and he closed his eyes.
“I’m dying,” he groaned.
“No you aren’t,” I laughed, “but you might have a helluva hangover tomorrow.”
“No, Lilac. I mean, I’m dead. Inside.” He thumped his chest over his heart with three fingers.
“I’m trapped in hell and you’re the only thing that makes me feel anything,” he whispered.
I sucked in a breath. He was definitely drunk and it was getting embarrassing that Ethan and Ella were witnessing this conversation.
